Yaeko Batchelor

Yaeko Batchelor, the adopted daughter of John and Louisa Batchelor. Mukai Yaeko was born in 1884 in Usu, the Ainu daughter of Morotcaro, also known as Mukai Tomizo. From the age of fourteen, Yaeko lived with the Batchelors and as an adult became an accomplished missionary in her own right and a critically acclaimed poet. Dr John Batchelor was a Christian missionary who lived from 1877 to 1941 among the indigenous Ainu communities in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.
