Dr John Batchelor, at Kamakura, Japan, 1930. Batchelor was a Christian missionary who lived from 1877 to 1941 among the indigenous Ainu communities in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. His wife, Louisa, was the sister of museum founders R.T. and W.F. Andrews
