Newsham Pump

Newsham patented fire pump, made circa 1740, photographed outside Hertford Museum. Believed to have formerly been the Ware parish engine and stood in the porch of St Mary’s Church ware for over 100 years under the care of the church wardens and vestry. Richard Newham produced his improved fire engine in 1725 and a later model with air cylinder, of which this is an example, in 1730.
