Whilst the Good Man is Abroad, the Good Woman Waits

Davidson Knowles (1852-1901)

Oil on canvas
HETFM:2095.5

Davidson Knowles was a British landscape painter, active in London from 1879. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, and exhibited at its gallery in Suffolk Street and at the Royal Academy. He also supplied illustrations to The Illustrated London News, and to The Girl’s Own Paper.

Margaret of Anjou and her son, Edward, Prince of Wales

Richard Westall R.A. (1765 – 1836)

Watercolour, 1802
HETFM:6246.1

Richard Westall was drawing instructor to Queen Victoria and noted for his portraits and illustrations. He lived in West Street, Hertford. This painting is based on the legend of Queen Margaret and the Robber by Agnes Strickland. Unlikely to be true, it is an example of the romanticism of medieval history by 19th century artists. Margaret of Anjou was said to have fled after the battle of Hexham and, after being robbed, became lost in the forest.

At Ware

Sidney Richard Percy (1821-1886)

Oil on canvas, 1876
HETFM:1445.1

Rural scene with cows by Sidney Richard Percy. Born Sidney Richard Percy Williams, Percy was a member of the Williams family of landscape painters. The painting seems to be an early example of his work so is more likely to be from the 1840s; the signature ‘Sidney Richard Percy 1876’ is probably not by him, but added at a later date. He rarely signed his work but on close examination the initials SRP can be found in the bottom left hand corner, which is probably his signature.

View of Great Amwell Church

Edwin Roper Loftus Stocqueler (1829-1895)

Oil on board, circa 1880-1895
HETFM:6463.1

Born in India, Stocqueler was noted for his landscapes of Australia and South Africa painted in the 1850s. This painting likely dates from the last 15 years of his life, during which he had fallen on hard times.

Hertford Market Place

Thomas Rowlandson R.A. (1756-1827)

Watercolour, circa 1800
HETFM:6065.1

Rowlandson was renowned for his satirical sketches. This one depicts Hertford market place in all its bustling glory. Whilst the market has changed, the majority of the buildings still stand today. Hertford Museum holds two additional Rowlandson watercolours; of The Bull Inn and The Bell Inn.
