Hertford Museum receives Heritage Lottery Grant!
Its been a very busy year at Hertford Museum, as we have been working towards the museum’s development project. In November 2007 we heard the great news that our Heritage Lottery application had been approved and we were to be awarded £985,000 to improve the services that we provide for the local community and other visitors (this is around 77% of the total cost of the project).
The grant will help the museum achieve its aims of encouraging more people to learn, enjoy and have access to the heritage of Hertford through:
- a completely revamped first floor which will enable more of the collections on display to tell the story of our town and its history
- a new lift to allow access for all
- a new ground floor ‘resource room’ where visitors can access our diverse and rich paper collections
- a new 3 year full time ‘Learning Officer’ post to widen learning opportunities in the museum and with our amazing collections (starting in September 2008)
- a new learning space on the ground floor

Hertford Museum will close on 24th December 2008 for the refurbishment and works to be done and will re-open in early 2010. During the closure, the museum will be organising a number of events and activities in other venues in and around Hertford and these will be displayed on this website.
We need your help!
Please help us to secure the future of Hertford Museum as a place where people of all ages can come to learn about our town, be inspired by our local heritage and take part in a wide range of activities. The total cost of the development project is just over £1 million and we are still trying to raise funds towards this.
We have designed 3 different levels of how you can help Hertford Museum. We wanted to name these levels after something from the museum’s collection and have named them after three important bicycles in our collection. The oldest and largest of all is the Penny Farthing. Following that is the ‘Velocipede’ or Boneshaker as it is also known and lastly, the most modern of our bicycles: the 1950s trade bicycle. The ways in which you can help are listed below. Most importantly you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have played a vital part in helping secure the future of this local gem for generations to come.
