Object of the Week – Crocheted Christmas Decoration

Wednesday, November 25th, 2015

The museum Christmas tree has been decorated by a set of these beautiful crocheted ladies for as long as anyone here can remember! This year, inspired by these ladies, we asked our Knit & Natter group to create more decorations for us and they’ve done a great job! We have knitted decorations, crocheted baubles, a beautiful handmade sequin covered bauble and our staff have been making a host of pom poms to add to the fun!

We’re still adding to the tree but if you come to our evening of Christmas Magic on Friday 27th November you’ll be able to see the completed tree! We’re going to be open from 4 – 8pm with FREE Christmas crafts, carol singing from St Andrews Church Choir and a visit from Father Christmas himself!

You can download a copy of our timetable for the evening by clicking on the picture below. Everything is free except the visit to Father Christmas’ Grotto which is £2.50 per child.

Then on Tuesday 23rd December we have a special day of Handmade Christmas crafts. Drop in between 10.30 – 3.30 for a chance to make some sparkly crafts including a very special decoration! It’s just £1.50 per child and a great way to break up your Christmas shopping!

We will be open on Christmas Eve until 2pm and then closed for the holidays! We reopen on the 2nd January with two days of Stay & Play for free!

Of course it doesn’t stop there, we have all sorts of exciting things planned for 2015 including an exhibition of photography by celebrated ornithologist William Bickerton, a chance for you to have your own nature photographs or artwork displayed in the museum, an exhibition all about Watton-at-Stone (so if you leave in the village we’ll be looking for photographs and objects soon) as well as exhibitions looking at all kinds of music in Hertford and, at the end of 2015, Hertford at War looking at some very special local stories and anniversaries as part of the First World War centenary commemorations.

It’s also our last Knit & Natter of 2014 this Thursday and there will be some festive treats alongside the usual tea & coffee so if you’ve never been before this would be a great month to start!

Make sure you’re following us on facebook and twitter or keeping a close watch on our website for information about all the Christmas fun coming up at the museum.

Christmas comes to the museum!

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2014

On Friday evening 841 of you visited our Christmas Spectacular! It was an amazing evening with the Christmas Lights being switched on in town, St Andrews Church Choir singing carols for us, some amazingly glittery crafts coming out of the Andrews Room and best of all Santa Claus himself was here!

If you missed out on seeing Santa last week then don’t despiar- he’s agreed to come and visit the children of Hertford again on Saturday 13th December as part of our Christmas Model Railway Day! He’ll be here from 10.30- 12.00 and then again from 2.00 – 4.00 so check out our website for full details!

Museum Takeover Day(s)

Wednesday, November 26th, 2014

If you follow us on twitter or facebook you’ll have seen that on Friday the museum was being aken over by students from Simon Balle school as part of Takeover Day.

The students designed trails around the museum and made their own posters to advertise the day and they even made cakes in case anyone turned up expecting the Hertford Country Market! In the afternoon pupils from local primary schools visited and were shown round by the students as well. It was a fantastic day and very well planned by the student team (we’re all a bit nervous for our jobs now!)

Then on Saturday the Andrews Room was taken over by the Hertford and District Camera Club annual exhibition. The exhibition was a great success and you can see the lists of winners on their website.

And there’s still one more very important takeover to come- this Friday evening the museum is going to be hosting Father Christmas himself as part of the Hertford Christmas Lights Switch On and our own Christmas Spectacular.

Father Christmas will be at the museum from 4-6pm and then from 6.45-8pm (in between he’ll be switching the lights on in the town centre) so drop in to say hello (£1.50 per child including a present!) and you can also have a go at a free Christmas craft and from 5.45-6.15 we’ll have St Andrews Church Choir singing festive carols too.

You can see what we got up to at least year’s Christmas Spectacular on our YouTube channel!

One more week till Christmas!

Wednesday, December 18th, 2013

There are only seven sleeps till Christmas but there’s still plenty to see and do (and buy!) at Hertford Museum.

Our World of Wallace exhibition is still open and the perfect place to escape to if all the Christmas planning is getting to be too much and it’s also a great time to have a look around our permanent galleries but if you can’t think of anything but Christmas then we’ve got lots of present ideas for everyone!

We’ve got beautiful minerals, a wonderful print of Hertford drawn by David Kirby (and just in this week we’ve also got cards with the same design- perfect for thank you notes!), stocking filler gifts, Christmas cards and not forgetting all our wonderful World of Wallace merchandise from mugs and bags to our brilliant “Where’s Wallace” poster (as a poster or a colouring sheet!)

There is one more chance to do some shopping at the Country Market this Friday and, by popular demand, the Craft & Curio Fair is squeezing in one more fair this Saturday!

After that we’re closed for Christmas and we reopen on the 2nd January with three days of Stay & Play for free! Make sure your signed up to our eNewsletter (you can sign up on our website) because we’ll be sending out lots of information about January’s events over the Christmas break!

And finally we’d like to leave you with a special Christmas video, just click on the picture below:

A busy winter at the museum!

Wednesday, December 11th, 2013

A fortnight without a blog- we’re very sorry but unfortunately things have been so busy here we forgot to update you!

In November over 4000 of you visited which is out busiest month ever (or at least within staff memory!) We had schools, U3A groups, shoppers (for our two regular markets as well as our own shop!), train enthusiasts, Alfred Russel Wallace enthusiasts and plenty of our regular visitors as well!

Things haven’t really slowed down in December either- our Christmas decorations are up and World of Wallace is still proving very popular plus we’ve had our regular Stay & Play and Toddler Tuesday sessions. Tomorrow it’s our final Knit & Natter of 2013 and you’ve got two more chances to visit the Country Market on Friday the 13th and 20th before they take a break until the end of January!

We’re also working hard on our exhibitions for next year which are going to include local artist Ronald Wright and an exhibition covering all the different ways we move (trains, ice skates, sedan chairs etc!).

Plus we’re going to be taking part in a special project for museums across Hertfordshire and Suffolk called Saving the Seventies– look out for more details early in the new year!

Finally we want to thank everyone who suppported our fundraising efforts for the Disaster Emergency Committee and their emergency aid in the Philippines- you all raised £305.23!

Christmas Lights & helping the Philippines

Wednesday, November 20th, 2013

It’s hard to believe but as we head towards December at speed it’s time to switch on the Hertford Christmas Lights!

This Friday, 22nd November, is the Hertford Christmas Gala! There’s plenty to do in town and as usual Hertford Museum will be staying open late with plenty to do for all the family!

The lights will be switched on at 6.30pm so you can pop in before or after to warm up. It’s free entry so just drop in!

Over the next fortnight we are also holding two events to raise money for the people of the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. All the money we raise will go directly to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) so please do come and support them!

On Saturday 23rd November from 10.30am – 3.30 pm we are running a fun family craft session. It’s a drop in session and we’re asking for a donation of £1.50 per child 100% of which will go to the DEC.

Then on Wednesday 27th November we’re having a special Afternoon Tea from 2.30 – 5.00 pm. You’ll be able to have tea or coffee with a lovely homemade cake or cookie for just £2.50 (or whatever you can give!)
