The Collections Trust (and our Christmas Model Railway Day)

Thursday, November 28th, 2013

Eagle eyed followers will have noticed that today is Thursday instead of our regular Wednesday blog, sorry!

Yesterday Sarah (our Assistant Curator) was at a Collections Trust conference about Digital Asset Management. The conference was looking at all of the digital assets (photographs, video, sound files, word documents, object records etc.) that museum’s care for now and how they can be best stored, looked after and used. It’s an issue that is becoming increasingly important for museums and we were very lucky to be given a free place thanks to funding from Arts Council England.

Museum's are very good at storing and caring for physical objects but we're still learning how best to store digital objects!

Hopefully over the next few years we will be finding better ways to make sure all of our “digital” collections are properly stored and working out how to share them with you- don’t forget you can already look through digital copies of most of our photographs on the Photograph Kiosk at the museum (and prints of these pictures make wonderful, personal Christmas presents!)

Yesterday was also our Cake Sale for the Philippines and we raised over £50 but there’s still money coming in so we’ll let you know the full total next week!

It’s hard to believe but as we head towards December at speed it’s time to switch on the Hertford Christmas Lights!

This Friday, 22nd November, is the Hertford Christmas Gala! There’s plenty to do in town and as usual Hertford Museum will be staying open late with plenty to do for all the family!

Our festive bonanza will run from 5.00 – 8.00 pm with mulled wine & mince pies on sale (as long as stocks last!), Christmas storytelling in the galleries, Christmas craft activities (starting from 4.00pm) and we’re very lucky to have Hertford St Andrews Church Choir singing for us from 6.00pm!

The lights will be switched on at 6.30pm so you can pop in before or after to warm up. It’s free entry so just drop in!

Over the next fortnight we are also holding two events to raise money for the people of the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. All the money we raise will go directly to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) so please do come and support them!

On Saturday 23rd November from 10.30am – 3.30 pm we are running a fun family craft session. It’s a drop in session and we’re asking for a donation of £1.50 per child 100% of which will go to the DEC.

Then on Wednesday 27th November we’re having a special Afternoon Tea from 2.30 – 5.00 pm. You’ll be able to have tea or coffee with a lovely homemade cake or cookie for just £2.50 (or whatever you can give!)

Upcoming Book Sale & a report from our Indonesian Evening

Wednesday, November 13th, 2013

Last Saturday we hosted a special late night opening with an Indonesian theme and it was great to see so many of you there!

IMGA0003 (small)

We had music from Gamelan musician Aris Daryono, Indonesian food and a chance to spend some time enjoying our World of Wallace exhibition- it was wonderful to see some of the adults attempting to design their own Bird of Paradise with our magnetic pieces!

You can watch a short video with some of the beautiful Gamelan music from the evening on our YouTube channel.

This Saturday 16th November we’re holding a Book Sale from 10.00am – 4.00pm with a large selection of secondhand books to choose from. All the money we raise will go towards future exhibitions and events so please do take this chance to get yourself a bargain and support the museum at the same time!

A Taste of Indonesia (and our new eNewsletter)

Wednesday, November 6th, 2013

This Saturday 9th November we are having a special late night opening at the museum from 6.00 – 9.00pm to give our adult visitors a chance to see World of Wallace and experience Wallace’s Indonesia through music and food (along with some more familiar drinks!).

Aru Islands (Malay Archipelago)

Music is being provided by Aris Daryono who was born in Central Java, Indonesia and who founded Go Gamelan!, a gamelan company based in London.

We’re also going to be launching our new mailing list which we’ll be using to send out emails to all of our supporters once or twice a month. With the cost of post going up all the time a eNewsletter is the best way to keep everyone up-to-date with everything that’s happening at the museum so we hope lots of you will sign up! We’ll be sending out our museum newsletter, event flyers, information about children’s activities and lots more so don’t miss out!

You can sign up to our new eNewsletter from the front page of our website.
