Keepsakes, Keyrings and Kiss Me Quick- new exhibition!

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

We’re in the middle of putting together our new exhibition on souvenirs this week. Keepsakes, Keyrings and Kiss Me Quick will be full of all kinds of souvenirs from seaside holiday memories to civic and royal memorabilia and there are going to be some great interactives for our younger visitors too.

The exhibition is opening on Saturday 2nd June, just in time for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations but here’s a quick sneak peek at one of the cases!

Come along on Saturday to see the new exhibition, have afternoon tea and also enjoy the first of our Stay and Play Saturdays!

We’ll be closed on both Bank Holidays but open as usual Wedneday- Saturday next week and on Wednesday and Thursday you can drop in and have a go at decorating a photoframe or making your very own Corgi puppet!

Check out the What’s On page of our website for more details on all our events and activities.

Spencer Gore, Hudsons Dental Care and museum loans…

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012

It’s another busy week at Hertford Museum as we prepare for the end of Horsnell’s Hertford and the start of our new exhibition Keepsakes, Key rings and Kiss Me Quick which opens on the 1st of June.

This week on the blog we thought we’d talk about some of the objects that have been loaned to Hertford Museum and some that we’ve loaned to others!

However big a museum’s collection is there are always times when we need to talk to other museums, groups or individuals to get that perfect object for an exhibition.

For our exhibition on Hertingfordbury we borrowed a Palaeolithic hand axe from the British Museum, a painting by Spencer Gore from Reading Museum and lots of photographs and objects from residents of Hertingfordbury and the Greens past and present.

Royal souvenir mugs for Charles & Diana and Andrew & Sarah's weddingsOur next exhibition is all made up of objects loaned by members of the public- we’ve got royal souvenir mugs, key rings from far flung places, souvenirs of travels far and near, a Butlins biscuit tin and even Take That pants!

But we don’t just borrow things from other people, sometimes we loan out our objects too.

This year Hudsons Dental Care are celebrating their 80th anniversary and to celebrate it there will be a special exhibition at the British Dental Association Museum in London. Hudsons current home is just across the road from Hertford Museum in Bull Plain and over the years we’ve collected some objects from them (including the dentist’s chair in our first floor gallery!) so tomorrow we’re meeting a member of the staff from the BDA to arrange a loan of some pieces for their display.

Hertford Carnival- thank you & a sneak peek

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

Thank you to everyone who dropped a green token (or 6) into our box at Waitrose last month. We raised a wonderful £470 which will all go towards our float for the Hertford Carnival and the work we are doing with local schools for it.

As a big thank you here are some pictures of our hardworking staff & volunteers putting together the bases of our giant objects ready for them to go out to our school partners to be built up and decorated!

Can you guess what any of these are going to become?

It will be open from Saturday 5th May to Saturday 26th May 2012 and many of the paintings on display will be available to purchase through the museum.

The museum is hoping to add two of the exhibited paintings to our collections and to help us raise the funds to purchase them we are asking visitors and supporters who are interested to give us a small donation. The two paintings we hope to buy are of McMullens and Christ’s Hospital. If you would like to support us then please get in touch!
